Katie Sowers

Katie Sowers is an American former football coach, born August 7, 1986. She is well-known for being the first ever openly lesbian female coach in the history of the Super Bowl. Before becoming a coach, she was a football player who played for professional American football teams like the West Michigan Mayhem and the Kansas City Titans.


Profession

Sowers began her American football career playing in the Women's Football Alliance. She joined the NFL in 2016 as a coach for the Atlanta Falcons and then with the San Francisco 49ers. In 2017, Sowers moved to the San Francisco 49ers as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. She became a seasonal intern before being converted to full-time offensive assistant. Prior to the beginning of the 2017 season of the National Football League, she announced her sexuality openly. She opened up as a lesbian and this made her the first ever LGBT coach in the National Football League.


She was also involved with the national team of the United States who played in the IFAF Women’s World Championship in the year 2013 and brought home the championship. Sowers continued to play in the WFA until her 2016 retirement due to a hip injury. She retired from coaching NFL football in 2020.
